Does Your Business Need a More Systematic Approach?

image As a real estate coach one of the most common practices I have seen missing within many agents businesses is the implementation and follow-through of good systems. As a Realtor I chose real estate as a career for many of the same reasons that so many people do; I loved real estate and wanted to make a good living doing what I enjoyed while still maintaining some control over my schedule.

Once I had made the decision to embark on this quest I found out pretty quickly that making a good living in real estate is usually accompanied by a complete lack of control over your schedule! So the question is… does it have to be this way?

I watched as Realtors that I had grown to admire worked frantically day to day in a manner that more resembled something like the floor of the New York Stock Exchange than a prosperous real estate business. Seeing this and knowing that my goal was always to make sure my wife and children came first was motivation enough for me to decide it was time to sit down and develop systems within my business before I became the next victim of the “stock exchange” real estate office. In reality just about every successful enterprise that I could think of operated under a systematic approach anyway so why weren’t Realtors applying the same principle?

I have posed this question to agents at conventions I have spoke at all over the country and the most common response I get from the agents that don’t want to systematize their business is that they are just not that systematic of a person or it is just not the way they are wired. This sounds great but I would argue that we are all systematic for the things that we deem important enough. When I dug a little deeper I discovered that these agents were in fact very systematic about their Tuesday night line-up on TV and hadn’t skipped their morning cup of coffee in years. These are examples of systems whether we label them as that or not. They are automatic reactions to a given action. Every day the sun came up and every day they made sure they systematically reacted by making a cup of coffee. The truth is that we are all systematic about the things we deem important enough whether we label them as such or not.

So why not implement systems into your everyday business? Unfortunately, by not operating within systems you are not the only one that is affected by your “controlled chaos”. A lack of systems and structure causes you to spend more time on every little detail than is necessary, become more stressed, which affects the way you feel and act towards others and ultimately takes away from the quality time that you could be spending with your family and friends.

So the question is not if you should be implementing good systems to increase your production and decrease the amount of time it takes to do so, the real question is how?

As a Realtor he built one of the largest and fastest growing real estate teams in New England, was inducted into the RE/MAX Hall of Fame and was even voted by the international publication REALTOR Magazine as their #1Realtor in the country under the age of 30, all within 4 years.

After deciding to become a full-time coach and speaker Jared’s debut book “Enjoy Success Today: How to Start and Build a Thriving Business… and Still Have a Life!” became a best-seller and his coaching programs have become a must do for any Realtors looking to take their businesses to the next level.

Jared is also a featured writer for the nationally syndicated Personal Development Magazine and Writer’s Weekly and blogs for Realtor Magazine.

Tasting this kind of success wasn’t always the case for Jared though. As a child he watched as his mother used food stamps and worked three jobs while raising himself and his two brothers. He believes that a lot of his current success came from these experiences and gave him the drive needed to work harder and smarter than others and succeed on another level.

Above anything else what Jared treasures most are his wife and two young boys.

Great Post! This is exactly what I have been missing in my business. I am not actually a RE/MAX agent but really enjoyed this article!
